What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the specialty area of dentistry dealing with identification, prevention and correction of teeth alignment. Some jaw alignment problems may require management and treatment with other dental specialists (Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgeons).

Who is an Orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a specialist in the field of orthodontics. An orthodontist’s training requires firstly being a qualified practicing general dentist for at least two (2) years, before undertaking a further three (3) years full time study at university in a Masters degree with research and examinations only in orthodontics. They learn and practise all the treatments and techniques that can straighten and align teeth.

Why should I have orthodontic treatment?

There are many advantages to having orthodontic treatment, including:
– having a great smile
– improvement to self-esteem
– improvement to self-image
– improvement to self-confidence
– improvement to bite and chewing function
– eliminate unwanted oral habits such as thumb or finger sucking
